Our mission is to revitalize and reclaim the Comanche Language to guide and assist our Comanche People in learning our language, culture, history and teachings.
Nʉmʉ Tekwapʉ̠ (Comanche Language)
Rooted in the Central Numic branch of the Uto-Aztecan language family, Comanche language shares its lineage with closely related languages such as Shoshone and Panamint. Additionally, more distantly related tongues include Kawaiisu, Ute, Mono, and Northern Paiute.
During the 1800s, Comanche served as the predominant trade language of the Plains region, spoken by thousands. However, today, fewer than 50 fluent speakers remain. Despite this, dedicated efforts towards revitalization, spearheaded by the establishment of the Comanche Nation Language Department, aim to preserve and promote this vital aspect of Comanche culture.
